Many of us have a preferred way of learning. They are learning by listening, learning by doing, and learning by seeing. These three learning styles are: Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Visual. Knowing which type of learning style your child prefers is beneficial for you as parents and us as tutors to give your child the best possible chance to succeed in class, in exams, and at home. We can all use more than one of these learning styles, and schoolteachers will use all three to keep their classes engaging, so their students stay interested whilst retaining the information.
We all start as kinesthetic learners, learning by doing, making, and creating as young children. Auditory and visual learning develops further down the line.
Why is it important to know your child’s learning style?
Your child’s natural or more dominant learning style is how they learn best. It dictates how their brain takes in information, understands it, learns new skills, and how easily they learn something new.
There are significant benefits in identifying your child’s learning style early as it will positively impact their academic potential, personal development, and professional growth.
There’s no right or wrong way of learning, and there isn’t a ‘best’ way of learning either. It’s about knowing your child’s strengths and weaknesses. And by understanding their learning style as their strength, we can help cater to their best way of retaining information and learning subjects and methods of revising for examinations.
By knowing which learning style is a weakness, we can help them improve, for example, speaking and listening exams, if your child isn’t primarily an auditory learner, they may lose interest or concentration quickly and therefore may not do as well. In situations like this, having a tutor at hand to help them, whether in one of our offices, at your home, or via remote video calls, we can hone in on ways to help them learn and excel.
